The Beading Begins -- Locked Away, Part 3

This is the first two evenings of beadwork. I decided to start by bordering both cabs, before I did anything else, and once the two cabs had met in the middle, I branched out a bit. That little green-lined amber line is going to follow the edge of the pendant for a bit, though I think it might run into a strip of bronze bugles along the way...

I really love doing bead embroidery. It's fun to design the piece as I go along. I have a lot of ideas in my head, but nothing is definitely until it's stitched down... and even then, I can undo it if I don't like it.

Unfortunately, I can't really take Locked Away to gaming with me today. The huge palette of beads I'm working with isn't very portable. I could technique just take one or two bead types and focus on those, but then what if I decided I needed something else? I'll have to content myself with an easier, more portable project... and just be ready to get back to Locked Away tomorrow!

  1. Good start! I do less bead embroidery than weaving because the weaving is kind of meditative for me. I'll be doing some ornamentation on my BFAC, but it's not embroidery.

  2. I'm just the opposite of Marilee. The bead embroidery is what soothes me the most. When making jewelry (mostly beadweaving), I tend to get caught up in trying to attain perfection and lose the sponteneity that I have with the embroidery.

Like you, I carry every possible bead I might need with me. LOL I like the start you made on the new page. Can't wait to see it finished.

  3. This kit is not portable, I agree! LOL I, too, like to carry all beads for a project with me because just as I get going another thought hits and I veer in another direction. The project is looking good. I'm just now attempting 'beyond the basics' bead embroidery...keep going, you're inspiring me!

  4. Thank you for the encouragement, all :)

I'm not sure that I find either beadweaving or embroidery to be particularly meditative, but I do enjoy them both for different reasons. Weaving has the benefit of less prep and finishing... No base, no gluing cabs, no stitching edges together. Waiting for the glue to cure for my cabs so I can bead is my least-favorite part!
