Fun with Photography!

I'm currently working on photographing some of my past work that has not made it onto Etsy yet. For instance, this Fire Dancer beaded lariat. My last attempt to get a decent set of photographs resulted in exactly 1 useful image. But yesterday I sat down to take some photos and I am really happy with them! In fact, the above picture is one of my favorites. Ever. It's just so nice! I am surprised that I took it.
Just for fun, here's a less-useful image. This is what happens when someone with zero formal photography training plays with the macro function on her digital camera.

  1. Try taking a full-on shot then go someplace like PicMonkey and crop the photo to the area you want a close up of. I'm learning, too, and that's a trick I've learned.

  2. I have been working with my macro too. Not easy for those of us who have no clue. Your picture is beautiful!

  3. Crazier, I do have a program that I use for cropping, resizing, and otherwise touching up... but in this case, the angle is weird and the focus is on a strange spot, so there's no saving it :)

Thank you, Kristen! I did get some nice macro shots, too, this one was just from a silly angle to see how it would turn out.

  4. AJ, silly angles are ok. I have a board on Pinterest labled "Dead" Things (no, nothing that was actually ever alive! I'm crazy, not gory!) and some of the shots I *didn't* use were... uhm... silly angles! (that's my story and I'm stickin' to it! ~hee~)

  5. They do work sometimes! This one probably would have been better if I wasn't using a piece of paper as a background, so that you can see the edge of the paper and then the velvety backdrop. Anyway, I ended up with 5 awesome photos and Etsy only allows 5 photos, so it's OK that this one is silly :)

  6. I don't know about silly angles but photography turned out to be the biggest challenge for my etsy shop, which is surprising since I am not bad at photographing people. Jewelry however is another ball game. Why so, I have no idea. I see photographs that look so natural, with great composition etc. Somebody needs to write a book about jewelry or macrophotography. The camera I use is probably the the first culprit ;) huh ?

  7. Having a decent camera helps, and good lighting! I think there actually are some books on photographing jewelry, there are also classes, on-line tutorials, etc.

Photographing my items and then editing the photos is my least favorite aspect of running my Etsy shop.
